Lukeme Kalule: “This song is about a beautiful girl called Awili, who rejected all rich candidates for marriage and instead chose Omollo Owiny. His name means as much as ‘a living poor man’. She chose Owiny because he was handsome and he dressed smartly according to Acholi tradition. Most important, he treats Awili with respect.”

Lukeme Kalule is an Acholi musician from northern Uganda. He has a beautiful deep voice and plays his ‘lukeme’ (thumb piano) in a percussive way.

Who we are

Ugandan Recordings is a Wandering Songs project to uncover and document music from northern Uganda. The search has found artists with a variety of instruments such as adungu, lukeme, nanga, bila and orak. All recorded songs are accompanied by video clips.
